As part of a special series on The Faces of KION North America, we sat down with members of our leadership team to talk about their thoughts on leadership. During this installment, we feature Janice Whitfield, Senior Human Resources Generalist.
What is your position, and in summary, what do you do?
I am the Senior Human Resources Generalist. I am responsible for all benefits, payroll, employee relations, and special projects as assigned.
What made you get into the industry?
A long, long, long time ago, I received a temporary job in Human Resources as an Administrative Assistant for a manufacturing company. I think the manufacturing of products is a very exciting industry with tangible goals where you can see what is being made and can touch and feel it. I spent ten years in banking when I moved to South Carolina. Manufacturing is a much more exciting environment.
What are the most important attributes of successful leaders today?
Leaders should always remember to lead by example. They should be able to run a department and business and still remember that they manage employees who are human beings. Being able to listen and have patience is always helpful as well. Communication is key!
What advice would you give someone seeking a leadership position in the material handling industry?
Be accepting of change, be sure to be organized, and have good communication skills.
